services
Welcome to the services and workshop page.
Our experienced Luthier Gareth lewis has listed the basic services available at cranes, together with the standard pricing.
Work is carried out with meticulous care and attention by Gareth who has years of experience and many satisfied customers. We endeavour to provide a fast, high quality service to all our customers, in all regards, and guitar services and repair is no different. Once your instrument is booked in, the work required will be done as soon as possible, although the time frame does depend on parts availability and the number of other jobs booked in. This means that unfortunately on occasion, the work may take longer than the estimated completion date, but we will endeavour to keep you informed when this is the case.
We also offer a collection service (mainland UK) you can discuss your needs with our workshop and we will then arrange to collect your instruments and return it when the work is completed. Do not hesitate to contact us to discuss this service.
All the work completed comes with a 90 day warranty.
The prices listed are approximations and the total will depend on the complexity and exact specification of each individual job. Parts and VAT are not included on the prices stated.
notes about full set-ups
Any guitar will benefit from a set up, even when brand new for various reasons, some of which are outlined below:
- Action height, string gauge and tremolo system can be custom tailored to your own specific requirements.
- Having your frets accurately levelled, crowned and polished will substantially improve intonation, ease of string bending, reduce fret buzz and improve general playability.
- Having a complete set up done in one go, means you will save time and money, and notice the difference straight away compared to having the work done in stages.

Other services offered by cranes
- School instrument hire
- Cranes school rental scheme
Everyone enjoys the beauty and fun of music, yet some of us never learned to play an instrument as a child. Cranes believe that all children should be given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument from an early age, and this is why we can offer your child the instrument of their choice on a scheme that is affordable to everyone.
We rent a large selection of quality new and second-hand brass, woodwind and stringed instruments. Instruments are rented for three months, at roughly 15% of the full retail price. You may then purchase your instrument at the retail price, minus your rental payment; or you can return the instrument.
If at the end of the three months rental you would like more time, you may rent for a further three months, at the same rate. Both rental payments will be credited from the purchase price of the instrument.
Please note that the rental scheme is only available for six months in total, however if you decide to buy the instrument within the first three months, you will be entitled to a settlement discount of 10% off the balance.
There is no obligation to purchase with the rental scheme. Simply return the instrument and its case to cranes in good condition by the end of the rental period.
- Written terms and conditions available on request
- Two forms of ID required, including proof of address
- Rental scheme is only available to school children
- All instruments listed are subject to availability

WEEE Regulations:
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive is now UK law. The legislation aims to make producers pay for the collection, treatment and recovery of waste electrical equipment. The regulations also mean that suppliers of equipment like high street shops and internet retailers must allow consumers to return their waste equipment free of charge.
The amount of WEEE we throw away is increasing by around 5% each year, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the UK.
- Much of the UK's WEEE ends up in landfill, where the lead and other toxins it contains can cause soil and water contamination. This can have a harmful effect on natural habitat, wildlife and also human health.
- Many electrical items that we throw away can be repaired or recycled. Recycling items helps to save our natural finite resources and also reduces the environmental and health risks associated with sending electrical goods to landfill.
Distributors of new Electric and Electronic Equipment (EEE) have a part to play in reducing the amount of WEEE going into landfill sites.
Cranes Musical Instruments is obliged under these regulations to offer our customers free take-back of their WEEE on a like-for-like basis when they buy a new electrical or electronic product from us. Customers wishing to return a WEEE item must pay for any transport costs incurred returning the WEEE item to us
For example: If a customer bought a new guitar amplifier from us we would accept their equivalent old amplifier and prevent it going into a landfill site by disposing of it safely. Customers must return their WEEE item to us within 28 days of purchasing their new item.
Under the WEEE Regulations, all new electrical goods should now be marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol
